French as a Second Language (FSL)
Ensemble, nous sommes capables!
All Renfrew County Catholic District School Board (RCCDSB) students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 are offered a range of French as a Second Language programs to maximize their French proficiency.
Through FSL, students will:
Strengthen first language skills
Enhance critical and creative thinking
Increase understanding of other cultures
Become better communicators
Increase career opportunities
Core French
In all of our schools, from Kindergarten through 8th grade, we provide 40 minutes of French as a second language (FSL) instruction.
All programs, including Core French, are based on the Ontario French as a Second Language curriculum and are inspired by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Extended French
Extended French is offered from Kindergarten to Grade 3 in select RCCDSB schools:
*In an Extended French program, French must be the language of instruction for a minimum of 25 percent of the total instructional time at every grade level of the program.
Extended French in High School
Extended FSL is offered at Bishop Smith Catholic High School (BSCHS), beginning in grade nine. In the Extended French program, students accumulate seven credits in French: four are for FSL courses and three are for other subjects in which French is the language of instruction. Presently, this includes ninth-grade geography, tenth-grade history and twelfth-grade religion.
The Diplôme d’Etudes en Langue Française (DELF) is available at both BSCHS and St. Joseph’s Catholic High School (SJCHS) to any student enrolled in a twelfth-grade FSL course.
The DELF examinations are recognized in 175 countries and are valid for life.
